SETONAIKAI (Seto Inland Sea) had been once supported the local industry, economy, and culture by keeping the close relationships with the life of local people, as not only the steamship route between Kinai District in Japan and the Asian Continent, but also the important inhabitant area for its local districts.
However, nowadays, SETONAIKAI is not as prosperous as it used to be, because while the land transportation system has been improved, its seaside industries has been declined, and the hollowing out of local city areas and the idle lands has been emerged.
In order to consider the activation of SETONAIKAI area, it is necessary to clarify the process of social and spatial change from the Edo period when it is said that was at its golden age, until now, and the relationships between SETONAIKAI and its local people from the viewpoint of coastal cultural history, through the researches and fieldworks.
The aim of this study is to establish the method of research, while doing the pre-researches focusing on the whole area of SETONAIKAI, and setting the base of this study at Kobe Design University. For the future, this study will be executed interdisciplinary, and make the suggestion for the community activation based on the local participation and cooperation from the viewpoint of coastal cultural history of SETOUCHI.
