The study discusses how these technologies about "letters," that are taken for granted in today's design industry, were developed through Japan's modernization process beginning with the end of the Tokugawa Shogunate. As a practical training of editorial design, the results of the course are to be compiled into a book. The study also explores into an unmistakable influence of the basic idea of "typesetting" derived from typographic printing as well as aesthetic sensitivity about letters on today's DTP processes using latest software.

The Preparation of the Master Plan for Inami Town in Hyogo Prefecture

KAWAKITA, Takeo
Professor, Department of Environmental Design, School of Design

Kobe Design University was commissioned to revise the master plan for Inami town in Hyogo prefecture, by the local government in 2006 and 2007. This report illustrates the planning process and the main features of the new plan. While the former master plan mainly focused on the urban districts and the large-scale infrastructures, the new master plan gives consideration also to particular local elements such as agricultural villages and small ponds. The new master plan is organized as the framework in which individual local resources contribute to create various attractive places that are linked each other by the network of the road systems including walkways and cycling tracks. As a whole, it is expected that the new master plan will provide the guidelines for both the people and the local government to improve their own environment through cooperation.
